Cocker Spaniel Rescue

Leia is a very sweet, laid back, five-year-old female cocker that was surrendered to CastawayCockers Cocker Spaniel Rescue in Hellam, PA because she started wetting in the house after the birth of her family's first child. The owners decided the wetting was behavioral and they put Leia in a "heated" shed in the back yard. That is where she lived for two years until she was surrendered to rescue in March 2004. Her owner also provided her medical records.

Her rescuers soon noticed blood in her urine and took her straight to their veterinarian. She was full of bladder stones that could easily be felt by palpating with your hand. It felt gritty like one of those old beanbag type ashtrays with sand in the bottom of them. The veterinarian took her directly into surgery, removing 80 to 100 very large stones from her bladder.

A phone call to Leia's previous veterinarian revealed that she had been diagnosed with bladder crystals in 2001. The owners never followed up with the ultrasound or the special diet that had been recommended. These stones had been in her for three years, however none of the records the owner supplied the rescue group mentioned anything about them.

Leia Leia is now fully recovered from her surgery and has been adopted. The analysis results came back indicating that the stones were the result of an untreated bladder infection. Her veterinarian says that she should stay on CD diet the rest of her life. Her adopter reports that everything is going well with Leia. She will now be living a life that she certainly deserves, after all she has been through.
Second Chances.
