PERPETUAL AND MEMORIAL TROPHIES

RUTH BAUMGARTNER PERPETUAL MEMORIAL TROPHY LAUNCHED AT ASC, 2006 Ruth Baumgartner, courtesy ASC Archives

The Ruth Baumgartner perpetual trophy fund was established by Ruth to be awarded for Best Cocker Spaniel at the American Spaniel Club Flushing Show. A prize will be awarded each year to commemorate the win.

Ruth Baumgartner loves all animals having grown up on a farm in Lexington KY with many pets but her special love affair with cocker spaniels began in 1940 after seeing Ch My Own Brucie on the cover of Life magazine. Richard, her husband, now deceased, often said he bought her first puppy because he was afraid he would come home one day and find a horse tied to their front porch. Ruth chose her street name as her kennel pefix and the Earnscliffe cockers were easily recognized in the show rings because of their stamp of elegance and style. Now, decades later, her commitments to the breed and to the club are well documented through her editorials in various publications and in the older pedigrees of all 3 varieties but most especially the blacks.

She attended her first ASC Show at the Roosevelt in 1950 and never missed another for well over 35 years. Ruth served 6 years on the Board, Standard Committee, Editor of the ASC Bulletin, Trophy Chair and judged the Futurity in 1989 San Jose, Ca.

Ruth still resides on Earnscliffe in Ft Thomas KY. She is a Life Member and she belongs to the CSC of KY. The Ruth Baumgartner PMT Fund was established in 2006 because Ruth wanted to give something back to the parent club of the breed she loves and to which she has committed most of her life.

In her own words: June 1953

I bought a fluffy puppy one day so long ago
Was prevailed upon to train him and put him in a show
A wide eyed novice I was then but enthusiastic too
So I trimmed and groomed and showed him
And came out with a "blue"
That show bug stung me real hard, a good breeder I'd try to be
So I read about the bloodlines, studied genetics and heredity
A puppy bitch came later (I'd had the cart before the horse)
Then I persevered and waited until nature took it's course
When she finally reached maturity I chose a stud with care
And 63 days later those wiggly pups were there
They grew up sound and healthy I showed them locally
And kept a buff bitch and a black my future dreams to be
The buff was bred some time ago to a stud of wide renown
And a puppy from that mating now proudly wears the crown
It's been 4 years since I started on that path of ups and downs
Of breeding cocker spaniels where joy and trials abound
"Twerps' now at home on Earnscliffe as handsome as can be
My first home bred Champion and my heart is filled with glee
As I've passed another milestone that I'll reach along the way
Of breeding better cockers who might go Best In Show someday
